Commenting on reports that the European Commission may force the sale of the profitable parts of Royal Mail in exchange for allowing the UK government to take over the pension deficit Mike Weir MP, SNP Postal Affairs Spokesperson, said that this “kicked the legs from under the UK government’s arguments for privatisation” and called for an urgent rethink of the proposals.
“The Royal Mail is far too important to Scotland and, crucially, to small businesses to be allowed to be broken up and sold off in this fashion.
“The privatisation of Royal Mail has always presented huge dangers to the continuation of the universal service obligation which is so important to Scotland. If the European Commission force the sale of the profitable parts this completely kicks the legs from under the UK government’s privatisation argument.”
“The UK government should abandon their daft proposals and work towards maintaining a strong Royal Mail in the public sector. If they do not, they risk destroying the universal service whilst only the private mail carriers benefit by getting hold of the profitable parts in a forced sale. That is in nobody’s interest.”
