Responding to the announcement by Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, that local authorities in England are to be granted new borrowing powers aimed at driving local investment and economic growth, SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson MP said:

“Tony Blair disparagingly compared the Scottish Parliament to a parish council. Now Nick Clegg has gone one step further by giving more powers to local authorities than the Liberal Democrats are prepared to extend to Holyrood.

“The need for Scotland to control the levers of economic growth has never been more urgent as we deal with swingeing cuts from London – two thirds of which were put in place by the outgoing Labour administration with a further third piled on by the ConDem coalition.

“Instead of pressing ahead with the unworkable fudge put forward in the Calman proposals, Nick Clegg needs to show some respect to Scotland and give the Scottish Parliament financial responsibility.

“Economists, civic society and business leaders all recognise that it is only full financial powers that will give the Scottish Parliament the ability to really support growth and to tailor the Scottish economy to the needs of the Scottish people.”
