WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JIM MURPHY'S PLEDGE TO FIND ALTERNATIVES?
The Labour party were today challenged by SNP MSP Christina McKelvie over his party's position on detaining children at Dungavel after a Labour MP called for the present UK government to reverse its policy and allow the children of asylum seeker to be held in the Dungavel detention centre.
Ms McKelvie said the call by Labour MP Michael McCann also brought into question a commitment in 2008 by Jim Murphy - Labour's shadow Scottish Secretary - to find alternatives to detention
Commenting Ms McKelvie said:
"So much for Labour's commitment to find alternatives to detaining children at Dungavel. In 2008 Jim Murphy announced that they would pilot alternatives to detention.
"It appears Labour has lost what morality it had when it comes to what is the imprisonment of children. I wonder if he supports his MP's position on this policy?
“The detention of children in immigration centres is wrong and must come to an end across the UK immediately.
“We must have proper clarity from Labour on this issue – the detention of children in immigration centres must end and it must end now”
