ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER BROKEN PROMISE BY CLEGG & CO.
Scotland’s young people have today [Tuesday] hit out at the Liberal Democrats after yet another broken promise by the party at Westminster.
In the House of Commons last night, LibDem MPs’ voted overwhelmingly against an amendment to enfranchise 16 and 17 year olds for next May’s AV referendum.
Lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 had been LibDem policy for years and comes just a number of days after they abandoned their policy on tuition fees for students in England and Wales. The moves leaves the SNP as the only major party willing to give our young people a voice in elections with 16 and 17 year olds able to vote in health board elections.
SNP MSP Aileen Campbell said:
“The LibDems are breaking promise after promise to Scotland’s young people. Their claim to represent young voters has fallen flat on its face as they put their Tory friends before their young voters.
“Their entire election campaign was based on opposing the Conservative's cuts agenda but now they are the Tory's executioners.”
Commenting Glasgow SNP candidate Humza Yousaf said:
“Scotland’s young people, whatever their age, have the power and influence to help us make Scotland better for their future and we are inviting them to be part of better and tell us the kind of future they want Scotland to have.
“Whether it is on the voting age; on tuition fees; or on opportunities for the future through apprenticeships and college places, the only party willing to stand up for Scotland’s young people and to work with Scotland’s young people is the SNP.”
