Commenting on publication of the Westminster Government’s new national
security strategy, SNP Westminster leader and Defence spokesperson
Angus Robertson MP said:
“This assessment clearly recognises the fact that we now face
different and complex security threats in a changed world, but it is
the decisions made in the defence review that will reveal whether UK
Ministers have made the right choices on defence priorities.
“The acknowledgement that the equipment we have available is still too
rooted in the Cold War mind-set does make it absolutely extraordinary
that renewal of Trident has been excluded from this review process –
that makes absolutely no sense at all.
“What is clear is that our conventional forces, who are serving us in
Afghanistan right now, must have the equipment they need, and their
bases and communities at home must be maintained.”
